The BIG Kitchen

This week I have volunteered to facilitate the snacks for 112 Vacation Bible School kids- for five days- at my church. While the foods and ideas were presented to me, I find myself at peace in the kitchen by myself. I've made individual zebra sundaes, giraffes (pear halves, celery, raisins and almonds), monkey food that's dropped in mud (bananas and chocolate pudding, snack bags of trail mix and amongst the chaos, found that I am in the right place. I've given directions to these kids on how to make their giraffes, and tomorrow will be some story about the monkey swinging from a tree (branches fall- pretzel sticks) and he drops his banana in the mud (pudding) and decides to eat it anyway. I'm having such a blast. I am very thankful to have been given this opportunity.

Final Grades are In

Two A's and One B. Now on to 1. Baking 2. Pastry and 3. Management and Supervision in July. Before that, a well deserved rest with my family for the summer, classes starting again July 12th. Haven't felt this relaxed and carefree since maternity leave in 2002! Thanks to everyone, once again, who have been such a HUGE support all this time.

Catering

One of my Chef Instructors offered me the opportunity to help out with one of his catering events today. He has his own catering company here in Atlanta. I just got back from a wedding reception with amazingly beautiful food for 150 people. I helped out in the kitchen a bit and then carved Beef Tenderloin and Rosemary Turkey Breast. Met some great folks. I hope I'll have the opportunity to work with them all again. This was a great way to spend my first day not in classes. What will tomorrow bring?

Good "Luck" Charms

So before my final on Wednesday, I asked the kids and J to give me a little something to put in my pocket so that I could remember them while I took my test. Eva gave me a Hello Kitty locket. Owen gave me a Native American Indian window crystal-- green-- that I bought for him. He chose it because it represents growth and reminded me of that when he gave it to me. (he's just amazing) J gave me a little glass bead thingey that he used in Sunday school to place around your "space" to be reminded of God's presence. They all made me cry.

Lunch Bags for MUST

The wonderful folks at St. Cat's helped decorate brown paper lunch bags for the MUST Ministries Summer Lunch Program. MUST delivers 1,200 bagged lunches every day to local areas where the children would not get a lunch during the Summer months, were it not for MUST. We beat Owen's goal of 500 lunch bags and WE DECORATED 700 LUNCH BAGS!

Thanks to everyone who came out today with stickers, paint, pens, markers, crayons. What a great turnout! Keep your eyes open, this event will happen again in June/July and we'll do a Protein Drive for MUST with the bags.

MY HISTORY

A cousin of mine posted some photos on FaceBook. When I saw them I about cried. I sent him an email asking him for a copy of this sign or the real thing to serve as inspiration and something to hang in my lunch place. My dad's parents owned a small supermarket at the beach in Lavalette, NJ. My grandfather was a butcher for A&P supermarket for years and also was a butcher in his store. I remember this store like it was yesterday and it brings tears to my eyes. When I was making pasta dough in class last week, I whispered to myself, "this is for you, Grandma.". She taught me how to make bread dough that we fried on Christmas Eve.

As I upload these photos, my eyes are filling with tears and my heart is pounding.
